The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that Daniel 11:40-45 is the present truth. It is to Seventh-Day Adventists at the end of the world what Daniel 8:14 was to the Millerites. These verses present the events connected with the close of probation, and they must be understood if God’s people will be prepared to stand through the closing scenes of this world’s history.

“The book that was sealed was not the book of Revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of Daniel which related to the last days. The Scripture says, “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” (Daniel 12:4). When the book was opened, the proclamation was made, “Time shall be no longer.” (See Revelation 10:6.) The book of Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made by Christ to John is to come to all the inhabitants of the earth. By the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to stand in the latter days.” Selected Message Vol. 2, 105.1

Daniel 11:40-45 Presents The Events Connected with the Close of Probation

Selected Messages, Vol. 2, pg. 106 states that there is to be an increase of knowledge regarding the work to be accomplished by the man of sin (the Papacy) in our day:

“In the first angel’s message men are called upon to worship God, our Creator, who made the world and all things that are therein. They have paid homage to an institution of the Papacy, making of no effect the law of Jehovah, but there is to be an increase of knowledge on this subject.”

It is also revealed that this increase of knowledge is a repetition of the history of Daniel11:30-36. Daniel 11:30-36 presents the history of the first rise of the man of sin—his uprooting of the three Arian powers that acted as barriers to his universal dominion (Daniel 11:31), the 1260 years of persecuting the saints (Daniel 11:32-36), and the exaltation of paganism and false worship (Daniel 11:36-39).

“We have no time to lose. Troublous times are before us. The world is stirred with the spirit of war. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place. The prophecy in the eleventh of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfilment. Much of the history that has taken place in fulfilment of this prophecy will be repeated. In the thirtieth verse a power is spoken of that “shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.”

“Scenes similar to those described in these words will take place. We see evidence that Satan is fast obtaining the control of human minds who have not the fear of God before them. Let all read and understand the prophecies of this book, for we are now entering upon the time of trouble spoken of: And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Manuscript Releases Vol. 13, 394.1

As Daniel 12:1 presents the close of human probation, and Daniel 11:30-36 has been fulfilled, it follows that Daniel 11:40-45 presents the events connected with the close of probation. They are also the verses in which we will see the history of verses 30-36 repeated. The events set forth in these verses have been revealed to God’s people, but today many Seventh-Day Adventists have no understanding of these events as if they have never been revealed:

“Before His crucifixion the Saviour explained to His disciples that He was to be put to death and to rise again from the tomb, and angels were present to impress His words on minds and hearts. But the disciples were looking for temporal deliverance from the Roman yoke, and they could not tolerate the thought that He in whom all their hopes centered should suffer an ignominious death. The words which they needed to remember were banished from their minds; and when the time of trial came, it found them unprepared. The death of Jesus as fully destroyed their hopes as if He had not forewarned them. So in the prophecies the future is opened before us as plainly as it was opened to the disciples by the words of Christ. The events connected with the close of probation and the work of preparation for the time of trouble, are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more understanding of these important truths than if they had never been revealed. Satan watches to catch away every impression that would make them wise unto salvation, and the time of trouble will find them unready.” The Great Controversy, 594.1

God reveals only that which is needful for our salvation (Deut. 29:29); and if His people today have no understanding of that which He has seen fit to reveal, it is because Satan has worked to catch away the very things they need to know to be saved. It is a scriptural truth that God’s people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). The final sequence of events has already begun, and the closing scenes will come upon us with blinding force; those without a saving knowledge of the truth for this time will be unprepared to meet the crisis.

Daniel 11:40-45 is Prefigured by Millerite History

At the center of the prophetic message that is present truth is the understanding that history is repeating. God’s people are repeating the history of the Millerites. Proof of this fact is set forth in the statement below which points to the Millerite history as a fulfilment of the parable of the ten virgins:

“When the third angel’s message is preached as it should be, power attends its proclamation, and it becomes an abiding influence. It must be attended with divine power, or it will accomplish nothing. I am often referred to the parable of the ten virgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish. This parable has been and will be fulfilled to the very letter, for it has a special application to this time, and, like the third angel’s message, has been fulfilled and will continue to be present truth till the close of time.” Review and Herald, August 19, 1890 par. 3

This parable was fulfilled—in the history of the Millerites—and will be fulfilled to the very letter—in our day. As Seventh-Day Adventists are repeating the history of the Millerites, it follows that we would have a similar message to preach as they did. What was the Millerite message?

“The scripture which above all others had been both the foundation and central pillar of the Advent faith was the declaration, “Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” [Daniel 8:14.] These had been familiar words to all believers in the Lord’s soon coming. By the lips of thousands was this prophecy repeated as the watchword of their faith. All felt that upon the events therein foretold depended their brightest expectations and most cherished hopes.” The Great Controversy 1888 Edition, 409.1

The message proclaimed by the Millerite Adventists was a prophecy from the book of Daniel. It follows then that God’s people at the end of the world would also proclaim a prophetic message from the book of Daniel. Daniel 8:14 presents the opening of the anti-typical Day of Atonement. Daniel 11:40-45 presents its close. We are now set to witness the passing of the Sunday law and the events that will lead to Michael standing up and closing all human probation as is stated in Daniel 12:1. These points considered, it becomes clear that Daniel 11:40-45 is the present truth message that we should give our time and strength to study and proclaim.

Daniel 11:40-45 is Salvational

The passage below from Early Writings shows two classes. The time period is the end of the 2300 year prophecy because it is then that God the Father moved from the Holy Place to the “Holy of Holies” in the heavenly sanctuary. The class that is described as cherishing the light for that time moved with Christ into the most holy place. Those who did not receive the light were left under the control of Satan.

“Before the throne I saw the Advent people–the church and the world. I saw two companies, one bowed down before the throne, deeply interested, while the other stood uninterested and careless. Those who were bowed before the throne would offer up their prayers and look to Jesus; then He would look to His Father, and appear to be pleading with Him. A light would come from the Father to the Son and from the Son to the praying company. Then I saw an exceeding bright light come from the Father to the Son, and from the Son it waved over the people before the throne. But few would receive this great light. Many came out from under it and immediately resisted it; others were careless and did not cherish the light, and it moved off from them. Some cherished it, and went and bowed down with the little praying company. This company all received the light and rejoiced in it, and their countenances shone with its glory.

“I saw the Father rise from the throne, [SEE PAGE 92.] and in a flaming chariot go into the holy of holies within the veil, and sit down. Then Jesus rose up from the throne, and the most of those who were bowed down arose with Him. I did not see one ray of light pass from Jesus to the careless multitude after He arose, and they were left in perfect darkness. Those who arose when Jesus did, kept their eyes fixed on Him as He left the throne and led them out a little way. Then He raised His right arm, and we heard His lovely voice saying, “Wait here; I am going to My Father to receive the kingdom; keep your garments spotless, and in a little while I will return from the wedding and receive you to Myself.” Then a cloudy chariot, with wheels like flaming fire, surrounded by angels, came to where Jesus was. He stepped into the chariot and was borne to the holiest, where the Father sat. There I beheld Jesus, a great High Priest, standing before the Father. On the hem of His garment was a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate. Those who rose up with Jesus would send up their faith to Him in the holiest, and pray, “My Father, give us Thy Spirit.” Then Jesus would breathe upon them the Holy Ghost. In that breath was light, power, and much love, joy, and peace.

“I turned to look at the company who were still bowed before the throne; they did not know that Jesus had left it. Satan appeared to be by the throne, trying to carry on the work of God. I saw them look up to the throne, and pray, “Father, give us Thy Spirit.” Satan would then breathe upon them an unholy influence; in it there was light and much power, but no sweet love, joy, and peace. Satan’s object was to keep them deceived and to draw back and deceive God’s children.” Early Writings, 54.2-56.1

Millerite history culminated in the separation of two classes (one with Christ and the other under the control of Satan) based on their response to the light for that time. As Seventh-Day Adventists are repeating that history, it can be understood that similar results will follow the reception, or rejection, of the light for this time. The light for this time is Daniel 11:40-45 as demonstrated in the previous sections. Therefore how one responds to the truths in these verses (whether they cherish it, or remain indifferent and thereby reject it) has ramifications for which side of the Great Controversy they will finally be found.

Daniel 11:40-45 is the Third Angel’s Message

The Spirit of Prophecy states that the Third Angel’s message is to run parallel with the First and Second.

“God has given the messages of Revelation 14 their place in the line of prophecy, and their work is not to cease till the close of this earth’s history. The first and second angel’s messages are still truth for this time, and are to run parallel with this which follows. The third angel proclaims his warning with a loud voice. “After these things,” said John, “I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory.” In this illumination, the light of all the three messages is combined.” 1888 Materials, 804.3

The First and Second Angels messages are also events; they represent a progression of divine history that occurred from 1840 to 1844 (see “Millerite History Paralleled” chart below). Therefore when it is stated that the First and Second Angel’s messages are to be repeated, it must be understood that the prophetic history connected with these messages must also be repeated. The Third Angel, running parallel to the first two, constitutes a repetition of the prophetic history of the First and Second.

When delineated upon a chart, it can clearly be seen that the events of Daniel 11:40-45 parallel those of the First and Second Angels messages.

Millerite-History-Parallel

These points considered, it becomes clear that Daniel 11:40-45 is the Third Angel’s message.

Daniel 11:40-45 is the Little Book

Daniel11:40-45 places all other aspects of the present truth message into their proper perspective. The return to the foundations of Adventism, the 2520 and the gathering of God’s people, September 11, 2001 and the sprinkling of the latter rain, Islam as the Third Woe of Revelation 9 etc. – these elements of present truth are all located within this progression of prophetic history. This prophetic history reveals, or places in clearer prospect, the relation of each of these truths to each other; it is the context within which all other elements of present truth are situated.

It has often been said by those questioning the teaching of the 2520 – “I can see the logic behind it, but why now? Where is it coming from? And why is it so important now?” The answer to this question lies in the fact that Daniel 11:44 presents the proclamation of the Third Angel’s message in the Sunday Law time period. In this time the message will go forth with latter rain power and its effect will be to “trouble” the King of the North (Papacy). But in order for this message to go forth, God needs to gather a people to proclaim it. The 2520, the prophecy of the scattering and the gathering, points to the gathering of the 144,000; the people who will receive the full outpouring of the latter rain and proclaim the message that will trouble the Papacy. Thus the 2520, its scope and purpose now at the end of the world, can only be properly understood in connection with the closing verses of Daniel 11.

Islam as the Third Woe of Revelation 9 and the “East Wind” of Bible prophecy must also be understood in relation to the last six verses of Daniel 11. The East Wind (Islam) destroys the ships of Tarshish (the economic power of the USA-therefore effecting the world). Daniel 11:41 points to the passing of a Sunday Law in the United States of America. A major cause of the crisis that will lead the people of the United States to call for Sunday legislation is a “loss of temporal prosperity;” a crippling economic collapse (Great Controversy pg. 590.1). The collapse of the U.S economy (and indeed that of the world) began on September 11, 2001 when the Third Woe, Radical Islam entered onto the stage of prophetic history. Islam is the catalyst for creating the state of economic and political affairs that will precipitate a national Sunday Law. But again, this truth is located within a prophetic history, and that history is Daniel 11:40-45.

In Summary

It has been argued that Daniel 11:40-45 sets forth the events connected with the close of probation. These events have been revealed, but Multitudes of Seventh-Day Adventists have no understanding of them as if they had never been revealed. God only reveals that which is needful for the salvation of His people, and it is for this reason that Satan has sought to keep God’s people ignorant of the correct interpretation and true significance of these verses. It has been argued that Daniel 11:40-45 is a repetition of the Millerite history and parallel’s their proclamation of Daniel 8:14. Daniel 8:14 presents the opening of the antitypical day of atonement, whilst Daniel 11:40-45 presents the events leading up to its close.

Daniel 11:40-45 is salvational, and it is the Third Angel’s message. It is the platform or context within which all other aspects of present truth can be understood within their proper bearing.
