Could Christ Have Sinned?

Question:

Was it possible for Christ to have sinned during the temptations of Satan in the wilderness and His everyday life?

Answer:

The simple words of Scripture are that He “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15). That is, though tempted, He did not sin. Was it possible? Indeed it was; otherwise, how was there any temptation? He was not only tempted in all points as we are but “behoved him to be made like unto his brethren.” “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same.” He “made of the seed of David according to the flesh.” (See Hebrews 2:17, 14; Romans 1:3). The temptation cost Him conflict, “prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save.” (Hebrews 5:7). But He overcame, prevailed. He took man’s nature with an awful risk. As long as the will of God reigned supreme in His life, He could not fail. But if He had sought His own pleasure, He would have sinned. Read Hebrews chapters 2 to 5. The “can” or “can not” rests with the purpose.
