Smoking Flax

Question:

In Matthew 12:20, it mentions “a smoking flax.” What does this mean?

Answer:

“A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench.” That means that God, in His great goodness, will not cut anyone off as long as there is hope for them. Even if the reed is bruised, He will not break it. He came to heal and restore. The smoking flax may be on the verge of being extinguished, yet He will not snuff it out. He respects the will of the sinner and does not force moral conclusions. In His immense mercy and goodness, He will do everything possible to assist those who are weak and seemingly without help.
