Question:
As Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone from God out of heaven, will there be a resurrection of the wicked from those cities to suffer the second death?
Answer:
We see no reason to believe otherwise. That was simply the first death, in which they died in sin. It was a temporary judgment on those cities because of their great wickedness. Everyone in the cities could have fled if they had heeded the warnings from God; instead, they chose to remain in the cities and their sins, ultimately perishing with them. Each individual’s case will come before the Lord in judgment, and each will be rewarded according to their works. This is supported by the words of the Lord, who tells us that “it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment” than for the other cities He named.
