Why is it said that the wicked shall be punished with everlasting destruction if they are resurrected after Christ’s second coming?
Answers:
The resurrection of the wicked does not take place so that they may receive another opportunity for salvation. They are raised at the end of the thousand years to face the final judgment and its sentence.
The first death comes upon humanity because sin entered the world and our race became fallen and mortal. Both the righteous and the wicked may experience that death. The second death, however, is the final consequence of personally choosing and remaining identified with sin. Revelation 20:14 declares, “This is the second death.”
At Christ’s second coming, the living wicked are destroyed by the glory of His appearing, while the righteous are taken to be with the Lord. The wicked dead remain in their graves until the thousand years are finished (Revelation 20:5). They are then raised, judged, and finally destroyed in the lake of fire.
This final punishment is the “everlasting destruction” spoken of in 2 Thessalonians 1:9. The process of destruction does not continue eternally, but its result does. The wicked are not repeatedly resurrected, nor do they return from the second death. Their destruction is everlasting because it is complete, final, and irreversible.
