“Made Known” the Sabbath — Nehemiah 9:13–14

Questions:

If the Sabbath was known and kept before the Israelites were brought out of Egypt, why does Nehemiah 9:13–14 say that the Lord “made known” the Sabbath to them after they left Egypt? Does Genesis 8:10–11 indicate that Noah was observing the Sabbath through its repeated mention of seven days?

Answers:

Nehemiah is referring specifically to what took place at Mount Sinai, not to the earlier giving of the manna. The passage says:

“Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: and madest known unto them thy holy sabbath” (Nehemiah 9:13–14).

The fact that God “made known” the Sabbath at Sinai does not mean that the Sabbath originated there or had never been known before. At Sinai, God publicly proclaimed, explained, and placed the Sabbath within His written law before the entire nation.

Israel was already expected to observe the Sabbath at least a month before Sinai. Exodus 16 records that the people gathered a double portion of manna on the sixth day and rested on the seventh. When some went out to gather manna on the Sabbath, the Lord asked, “How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?” (Exodus 16:28). This language shows that the Sabbath was not being introduced as something entirely new.

Exodus 5:5 may also indicate that Moses had begun restoring Sabbath rest among the Israelites while they were still in Egypt. Pharaoh complained that Moses made the people “rest from their burdens.” The word translated “rest” is related to the word Sabbath. While this verse alone does not prove the point, it is consistent with the broader biblical evidence that the Sabbath existed before Sinai.

The Sabbath originated at Creation, not at the Exodus:

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:2–3).

God blessed and sanctified the seventh day long before there was an Israelite nation. That is also why the fourth commandment begins with the word “Remember.” Israel was being called back to something God had already established.

As for Noah, Genesis 8:10–12 shows that he reckoned time in repeated periods of seven days. This confirms that the seven-day week was known long before Sinai. However, the passage does not specifically say that the seventh day mentioned was observed as the Sabbath. Since the Sabbath had been sanctified at Creation and Noah “walked with God,” it is reasonable to believe that he knew and honored it, but Genesis 8 by itself does not explicitly prove his Sabbath observance.

At Sinai, God made several important truths about the Sabbath unmistakably clear:

1. The Sabbath was placed within God’s holy law. It stands at the heart of the Ten Commandments as a continuing moral obligation, not merely as a temporary ceremony for Israel.
2. The Sabbath identifies the true God as Creator. It continually reminds us that “in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is” (Exodus 20:11). We worship Him because He created us.
3. The Sabbath is also a sign of God’s sanctifying power. The Lord declared, “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them” (Ezekiel 20:12; see also verse 20).

The God who created the world is also the One who recreates fallen humanity. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Creative power and redemptive power are therefore inseparably connected.

The Sabbath is a living memorial of God’s power to create, redeem, and sanctify. Sinai did not mark the beginning of the Sabbath; it marked its public proclamation to Israel as part of God’s holy and unchangeable law.
