Question:
Please reconcile 1 John 5:18 and Matthew 6:12. Why did Christ teach us to seek forgiveness daily if a true believer born of God does not sin?
Answer:
The essence of 1 John 5:18 is that a true child of God does not practice sin; that is not their goal or purpose in life. Their primary aim is to fulfill their Master’s will. However, this does not mean they will never make mistakes, even if they strive to act as wisely as they can in every moment. As they reflect on their life, comparing it to the Master’s, they recognize their shortcomings. The closer they draw to the Master, the more apparent their imperfections become.
God values a person’s intent over their actions and considers them righteous in Christ Jesus. Yet, the humble disciple can only see their imperfections and daily prays for forgiveness, seeking to have all their faults, failings, and mistakes covered by Christ’s grace.
