First Principles

Question:

Please explain in general terms Heb. 6:1, 2. What is the significance of the plural of baptism?

Answer:

The concepts mentioned here are the foundational principles that come into play in the Christian experience. While believers hold onto these principles, they should not remain stagnant. Just as a child is expected to grow after birth, so too is a believer expected to mature. The sinner comes to God, repents of their sins, believes, is baptized, and in those days, receives the Spirit—all in anticipation of the resurrection and judgment.

Regarding baptisms, Professor Stuart notes, “Another explanation is that ‘baptismon’ does not differ in any significant way from ‘baptismou,'” then he provides several instances where the plural form is used in a singular sense. It is not plural baptism that immerses part of a person once and part three times; that is not how Christ was buried. Instead of getting caught up in unnecessary debates over clear responsibilities, “let us go on to perfection.”
