Question:
Will our Creator overlook or excuse the absence of the letter of the command when the spirit of the command is evident?
Answer:
When we are enlightened, the only safe course of action is to act quickly and not delay in observing God’s commandments (Psalm 119:60). The only being in the universe who can accurately interpret the spirit of the law for us is God, and He has done this in His Word and through the life of Christ. The Word clearly states, “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:10). Christ honored this day because He had the law of God in His heart (Psalm 40:7-8).
Who has the right to replace God’s commands, substituting the profane for the holy? Nadab and Abihu attempted this and faced severe consequences (Leviticus 10:1-10; Ezekiel 22:26). Should we try to pass off a counterfeit when we know the genuine article?
Let us heed the Word; there is no substitute for obedience, and there is no safety apart from doing the will of God. Please read and reflect on 1 Samuel 15:22-23, Deuteronomy 4:2, Matthew 7:20-23, and Matthew 15:9, 13.
