To What Law?

Question:

To what change of what law does Hebrews 7:12 refer? Some teach that it specifically refers to the Ten Commandments, especially the fourth one.

Answer:

Read the context, or less, even the verse itself, and there can be no more questions. The verse states: “For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.” (Hebrews 7:12). It is the law relating to the priesthood. “The priesthood being changed,” of course, the law regulating it must be changed. The Levitical priesthood was vested in the house of Aaron of the tribe of Levi. The time of service, the kind of man, and the sacrifices he offered were all specified in law. But when Christ began His priesthood after the order of Melchizedek, He came from a different tribe to serve after a different order. The text in question has no more bearing upon the Ten Commandments than the Constitution of the United States. Using it to prove the change of the Sabbath shows what desperate straits error is put to defend itself.
