Reading the Old Testament Scriptures

Question:

Should we read the Old Testament?

Answer:

It is essential for us to read and study the Old Testament Scriptures. The Master said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). When He made this statement, the only Scriptures in existence were the Old Testament writings.

After His crucifixion and resurrection, while walking to Emmaus with two of His disciples, He expressed, “These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day” (Luke 24:44-46).

Christ taught from the Scriptures written by Moses, the prophets, David, and others who authored the Psalms. This example and teaching of Christ, which took place after His resurrection, are firmly established in the new dispensation. It is always wise to follow the example of the great Pattern.
